26 Miles to the Moon: The Great Space Race Is On! by Andrew Males
I came across the author Andy in one of my book groups, the cover & title of his book caught my eye so I immediately agreed to read & review. I really had no idea what to expect & it’s not normally the kind of book I would ‘choose’. However I will say loudly & clearly upfront it is brilliant! I feel as though I have been on the entire journey myself.
Firstly meet Jon, a likeable but possibly boring guy .. stuck in a rut with not a lot of ambition. He gets an email out of the blue that could potentially alter his life .. will he take the plunge?
From the outset this book had me giggling or squirming with embarrassment for him. Add in cheeky/adventurous Summer, the unpleasant Nicki (who I could cheerfully have flattened) .. sweet Ceris, best friend Stu, bossy Jackson, Doug, not forgetting Conan the cat & the other participants & you are in for a fun read.
The story obviously centres around a marathon & it’s written with such understanding you feel as though each painful step is achieved by yourself! It is set in New York which just happens to be my personal favourite city in the world so it was a joy to follow the route so wonderfully described.
The pace of the book keeps you hooked & willing Jon to succeed .. give it a go, you won’t regret it.
Thank you so much to Andy for giving me the chance to enjoy this .. if this is the standard of a debut then I can’t wait for his next book!
