About the Author

Em muslin has worked in the film and television industry for over 20 years. She first fell in love with reading and writing after experiencing Judith Kerr’s When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. She hasn’t stopped devouring books ever since. She loves words that capture an experience or emotion in a singular form: her current favourite, describing herself, isnemophilist. Em’s writing career has included developing a script for a stage musical with Tina Turner, and writing a bitter-sweet comedy screenplay, Last Chance Saloon. Em’s writing focuses on the texture of domestic life, relationships, family and the pressures of social convention. Her characters are often fighting to become the hero of their own story, searching for hope, despite the adversities that life inevitably brings.

My Review

This is a slow burn emotional book that shows how we use all our senses when undergoing grief or trauma. Fourteen years old and pregnant, Eli gives birth to a beautiful baby who she glimpses for the briefest of moments until her mother signs her away for adoption. The agonising memory of the sight and smell, the sound of the nurses footsteps as she takes her baby further away .. all heartrendingly described and I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I am a mother, personal reasons mean this story resonates with me so much and I found it quite a difficult read from that respect.

Eli’s family are awful, there is no compassion she is just an embarrassment to them they care more for her ex-best friend Daisy who is objectionable! Eli finally begins a relationship with Tommy, he works with her Pa, they get married and assume they will be be blessed with children of their own.

Even with Tommy at her side the darkness and longing are still in Eli’s heart, the only place her baby can’t be removed from. Some thirty plus years later she is in a grocery store and spots a woman and is convinced SHE is the one. What follows is a tightly wound tale of hope, love, secrets and lies.

The father of the baby was Eli’s closely guarded secret but does Tommy have secrets of his own? You will have to read Before You Were Mine to unravel this mystery. Just be prepared for a few tears. Em Muslin pours her feelings into this book and they materialise into vivid images for the reader. A fine debut and I look forward to reading more from her.

Thanks to Em and Jenny at Neverland Book Tours for my copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
